The BSM's first FREE LUNCH has been scheduled for September 5th for months. Now, Tuesday, September 5th is the FIRST DAY OF CLASSES. As so many of our Lonestar students have lost so much, I've been thinking & praying about how the BSM should respond on campus. In conversations with the Student Life Office and our scheduled lunch provider (Crossroads Baptist Church) BSM will be hosting a Tent of Reflection and Prayer from 10am-1pm. We are going to move our regular FREE LUNCH outside & offer free food to those who come through and spend time in the tent. With this event we are NOT trying to feed the entire campus but to minister to those who are hurting. I've also offered the Student Life our ability to connect students and their families with the network of Baptist Churches in Montgomery County (and beyond) standing ready and eager to help.
The Tent of Reflection & Prayer will include opportunities to respond through:
PRAY for our time on campus Tuesday:
As we brace for Hurricane Harvey and pray for those that will be effected by his impact, I cannot help but think of all the prayer, prep work, coordination, and organization that has gone into the BSM KICKOFF COOKOUT next Tuesday, August 29th. We all knew there was a chance that the Disaster Relief Trailer from West Conroe Baptist Church would not be available if there was a national or natural disaster. BUT WHAT ARE THE ODDS OF THAT, right? Well, there's a very good chance with Harvey looming in the gulf. So now what?
I've always said that this BSM is a God thing. All that has happened so far... can only be explained because of the working of God. Our God is big and can move on campus regardless of how we start the semester. Let's pray that he shows off in a big way in spite of Harvey.
If you are a church partner or volunteer, hold tight. I'll keep you posted as the weekend progresses and I know more.
It is truly exciting to be part of what God is doing among local college students! Today we had a nice "intimate" conversation (with 27 students) @ BSM FREE LUNCH were students took turns sharing scripture & explaining why it had been relevant in their life.
"I trend to be an individual with intense feelings & have the potential to get depressed easily. Because of that, a verse that has strengthened me recently is Micah 7:8, 'Do not gloat over me, my enemies! For though I fall, I will rise again. Though I sit in darkness, the LORD will be my light.' (NLT)."
I've been taking care of my mother as she has been sick, my verse is Exodus 20:12 "Honor your father and mother." Another student added, "That verse is the only commandment that has a promise with it."
There is something very cool about facilitating a conversation with students as they share with their peers how Scripture has been relevant in their life. Which allowed me the opportunity to impress the need to regularly read scripture, to "chew" on it, and to experience its power in our lives.
BSM is experiencing MOMENTUM, which in turn has drawn students to FREE LUNCH. Many of these students are open and are seeking a conversation with someone about their faith question. They want more information about the Bible and about Jesus. In the past two weeks, I can count SIX conversations with SIX different students interested in MORE. One student I talked with today has no background in the church but is actively interested in the reading Scripture and learning about Jesus. He seems highly intelligent but at the same time he had no reference for scripture - did not even know the story of Jonah and the whale. (Reminded me of conversations I had while living in San Francisco, CA). PRAY for these students, that God would reveal Himself to them, that he would provide opportunities for BSMers to have conversations with them and He would draw them to Himself.
As I left campus today, I could only think of John 4:35 NLT, "Wake up and look around. The fields are ripe for harvest." What an honor to be part of all that Yahweh is doing among local college students.
"Coming to fruition..." Every once in a while I get a glimpse of ripening fruit after a year of planting new ministry. Today, was one of those days. It was a day filled with the potential of new ministry partnership because of the diligent work of a faithful volunteer. A day when a campus relationship (which I'd been praying for) was forged. Topping off the day was our FREE LUNCH experience. Our "Questions of the Day" was: "How do YOU know the Bible is relevant?" We talked about how you really cannot have an opinion of the relevance of Scripture unless you are actively spent time reading it. We talked about how the 1st century church (while not having "preachers designated" to share insight from Scripture) would spend time sharing Scripture with each other that had been meaningful in their life.
I challenged students to share Scripture that had been meaningful in their own journey and then share why it had been meaningful. What followed was a sweet time of peers sharing Scripture and life lessons with each other. They seemed to just be getting warmed up when it was time to wrap up. With a request continue the conversation during next weeks lunch, many students hung around for 15-20 min's after lunch still talking an sharing with each other.
FRUIT FROM A NEW MINISTRY PLANT - TODAY WAS A GREAT DAY TO BE PART OF WHAT GOD IS DOING @ BSM MONTGOMERY!
March 7, 2017 marked ONE YEAR since BSM Montgomery became an official organization @ Lonestar College Montgomery. So we decided to celebrate! Little did we know that not only would a fantastic friend of BSM agree to host our lunch FREE LUNCH but that they would decide to make it an extra special celebration by providing Fajita's from Chuy's!
It was fitting then that we ate meat for lunch since we were planning on discussing 1 Corinthians 3:2 - how spiritual one year olds move from being bottle fed to learning to eat spiritual meat for themselves (ie: spiritual disciplines).
A party and a present too! (Due to the generosity of a donor the BSM was able to purchase a tailgating tent for events on campus.)
Happy 1st Birthday, BSM! Here's to many more!
As BSM Montgomery approaches our FIRST BIRTHDAY (March 7th) we are reflecting on how far we've come in our first year. We are a toddler - we have our feet under us, we are beginning to walk, but we have a lot of work to do before we can run! So far:
The reality is that this is only possible because of the fantastic BSM Volunteers. The details of weekly lunches are not possible without Krystal. The financial oversight & accountability of the ministry budget happens only because of Jennie. Ryan adds a layer or partnership as a volunteer Associate Director that allows more feet on the ground as well as his expertise and love for students.
Tamara is our big picture person. Her experience with college students (since 1996), her education, and her gifting allows her to know what needs to happen for the BSM to move forward. She
Tamara also raises her own salary as a Texas Baptist Missionary in order to minister @ BSM Montgomery. Tamara's currently at 65% of her salary for 2017-2018 school year. Which means she needs to raise another $750.00 per month before she is fully funded. PRAY for Tamara as she enters a season of personal fund raising - seeking a fully funded salary. Consider becoming one of her personal monthly supporters today? If you have questions regarding partnership, Tamara would be happy to sit down with you for a conversation - email her to set up an appointment.
I wanted to share with you the fantastic week BSM just had! Many answers to BSM Prayer Requests!

The best advertising is "WORD OF MOUTH" OR is it by BSM T-shirt!? A personal endorsement either way! A local friend did the designed - free of charge and a donor is purchasing the shirts! An added bonus is that we will get them in time to give them to all the students attending the BSM Winter Retreat - January 13-14th!
While T-shirts may seem simple or even trivial, they've been on our "wish list" since the summer. T-shirts add a level of "legitimacy" to ministry on a college campus so we're grateful for this provision that just simply wasn't in our budget.
Today I met a “Beth” at our last BSM FREE Lunch for 2016. She has given me her blessing to share the following with you so you could add her to your prayer list, if you would like to do so. Today was our first time to meet and her first time at any BSM event. She enjoyed her free pizza and our group conversation about Christmas. Beth lingered until everyone had left and we spent the next hour talking together, during which she informed me of several events during the last year of her life that many individuals never experience in 50 years.
Beth mentioned that she felt “drawn” to our lunch but did not know why. She mentioned that she has had an experience with God earlier in life but has spent recent years away from Him. Her life events of 2016 are pushing her to engage with faith again. She admittedly is unsure what that means and is wrestling with whether she believes there can be a loving Being if he/she allows horrific events to continue to unfold in her life.
Beth was eager to talk about faith and is interested in further prayer and conversation about faith. Please pray that God reveals himself to her and her husband, shows them His unfailing love, and brings healing during uncertain times.
Feel free to leave a comment or pray below - I'm sure she'd be encouraged.
